The Bolivian itinerant healers of the Kallawaya also call their homeland "Kallawaya" - the land of doctors. It produced many famous medicine men. To this day, the Kallawaya practise their centuries-old shamanistic healing art on long wanderings throughout South America. Their pre-Inca worldview is a complex cosmology of myths, rituals and a profound knowledge of the healing powers of plants, animal parts and minerals. Aurelio, one of the last Andean healers, hopes his son Cerilo will succeed him. But not everyone is destined to learn the art of healing. Whether Cerilo is one of the chosen few will be revealed on the long journey from Bolivia to the Inca stronghold on Machu Picchu, where his father takes him as an apprentice.
